What Is an Electrical Cross Arm?
The cross arm is the horizontal load-bearing steel member mounted at the top of a utility pole to support overhead conductors. Cross arms come in channel-section, rectangular-section, alley-arm, and angle-brace configurations — each chosen based on conductor weight, span length, wind & ice loading, and phase spacing. Raxsteel produces 7 standard cross arm and bracing products, all hot-dip galvanized.
Types of Cross Arm Products
Channel & Rectangular Cross Arms
The standard channel-section cross arm is the most widely used profile for distribution lines, while the rectangular (closed-box) cross arm provides extra stiffness for transmission spans or ice-loaded regions. Both are drilled to project drawings — bolt holes 13/17/21mm, double-arming hole sets and pin-insulator mounts on request.
Alley Arm & Power Pole Cross Arm
The alley arm is an offset cross arm used in narrow rights-of-way (alleys, urban streets) where a symmetric crossarm cannot fit. The power pole cross arm is the heavy-duty version for primary distribution voltages up to 35kV, with the longest standard length and thickest material grade.
Bracing Components
The angle brace, cross arm brace and guard arm brace are diagonal supports that carry vertical and horizontal loads from the cross arm back to the pole. The double arming plate ties two cross arms together for double-arming installations on dead-end and angle structures.
Standards & Material Specs
Raxsteel cross arms are produced from hot-rolled mild steel (Q235 / ASTM A36) and finished with hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A153 / ISO 1461 (zinc thickness 80−100µm). Standard lengths run 1.2−3.0m; custom-length and pre-drilled units are made to customer drawings with 25−30 day lead time.
How to Spec a Cross Arm
Send us a sketch with: (1) total length, (2) bolt-hole pattern with center-to-center dimensions, (3) end-cap configuration, (4) the conductor type and spacing requirement. We return a CAD drawing, quote and lead time within 24 hours. Free 3−5 piece samples available before bulk production.
