Where it is used

The guy grip is a preformed helical dead-end that terminates a down-guy or span-guy strand at the pole or anchor. Its helical legs wrap onto the strand and grip by distributed tension — anchoring the guy tool-free at full strand strength, the standard termination for utility guying worldwide.

Installation sequence

  1. Select the colour-coded grip for the strand size and class.
  2. Mark the strand at the crossover reference point.
  3. Wrap each preformed leg onto the strand in turn.
  4. Snap the legs home so the helix fully seats.
  5. Connect the grip eye to the guy hook / anchor / thimble.

Buyer’s Guide: Guy Grip

1. What a Guy Grip Is

A guy grip is a set of helical preformed legs that wrap onto a guy strand to dead-end it. PLP pioneered the design in the 1940s; it grips by distributed wrap tension along the legs rather than a clamped point, so it develops the full strand strength without bolts or wedges.

2. 100% Strand Strength

A correctly matched guy grip holds 100% of the strand's rated breaking strength — the strand, never the termination, is the limiting element. Because the grip is made of the same material as the strand, the two work together without galvanic or hardness mismatch.

3. Colour Coding by Strand Size

Each grip is colour-coded (yellow, red, green, blue…) to a strand size and class. Crews pick by colour: an oversize grip will not grip, an undersize one will not wrap on. Always match the colour to the strand.

4. Tool-Free Application

Guy grips apply by hand — no press, no torque, no wedges. This makes guying fast and removes the over-/under-tightening risk of bolted clamps. Each grip is single-use; do not re-apply a removed grip.

5. Strand Type Compatibility

Made for EHS (extra-high-strength) and galvanized steel guy strand, with Alumoweld versions for aluminium-clad strand. Match the grip to both the strand diameter and its construction.

6. Pairing With Guy Hardware

The grip eye takes a guy hook, anchor shackle or thimble-clevis. Order with the matching guy hook, thimble and anchor rod so the down-guy assembly is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a guy grip hold without bolts?
Its helical legs are pitched to the strand lay and wrap on; distributed wrap tension grips the strand at 100% of its breaking strength — no bolts, wedges or tools.
Why is colour coding important?
Each grip is matched to a strand size and class by colour. An oversize grip won't grip, an undersize won't wrap on — always match the colour to the strand.
Can I reuse a guy grip?
No — guy grips are single-use. Once a grip has been applied and removed, the preform is set; fit a new one.
What strand does it suit?
EHS and galvanized steel guy strand, with Alumoweld versions for aluminium-clad strand. Match both diameter and construction.
What attaches to the grip?
The eye takes a guy hook, anchor shackle or thimble-clevis. We supply the matching guy hardware for a complete down-guy.
