Where it is used

The span clamp taps or supports a conductor at mid-span — away from any pole — to take a service drop, a jumper or a mid-span support wire off the main line. Its parallel-groove body bolts the tap conductor against the main run, making a solid mechanical and electrical connection without dead-ending either.

Installation sequence

  1. Select the clamp for the main and tap conductor sizes.
  2. Clean both conductors of oxide at the contact point.
  3. Lay both in the grooves and fit the keeper.
  4. Torque the bolts evenly to the specified value.
  5. Apply oxide inhibitor on aluminium connections.

1. What a Span Clamp Does

A span clamp makes a connection at mid-span, away from structures — tapping a service or jumper conductor onto the main line, or supporting a secondary wire. It is a parallel-groove connector built to hang in the span rather than mount on a pole.

2. Parallel-Groove Grip

The main and tap conductors lie in parallel grooves and are clamped together by bolts. Contact pressure makes both the mechanical hold and the electrical path, so correct torque and clean conductors matter as much as clamp size.

3. Sizing by Both Conductors

Select by both the main (6–30 mm) and tap diameters — the grooves must close on each. A clamp sized only for the main may not grip a thin tap. Order by both conductor types.

4. Aluminium, Bronze or Bimetal

Aluminium body for all-aluminium connections; bronze for copper; bimetal (Al–Cu) when joining aluminium to copper to prevent galvanic corrosion. Match the body to the conductor pair.

5. Electrical Integrity

Because the clamp carries current, clean the conductors and apply oxide inhibitor on aluminium. A poor span connection runs hot — treat it as an electrical joint, not just a mechanical one.

6. Where It Fits
