Application & Installation
Where it is used
The straight-line dead-end is a preformed helical termination that wraps the conductor, guy strand or earthwire along its own lay to dead-end it at a pole or tower. It grips by wrap tension over a long length — no bolts, no press — and ends in a thimble eye for the dead-end attachment.
Installation sequence
- Select the colour-coded set for the conductor diameter.
- Mark the conductor at the dead-end reference point.
- Wrap each preformed rod over the conductor in turn.
- Snap the rods home so the helix fully engages.
- Connect the thimble eye to the dead-end hardware.

1. What a Straight-Line Dead-End Is
A straight-line (preformed) dead-end is a set of helical rods, pitched to the conductor lay, that wrap on to terminate the conductor. The grip comes from distributed wrap tension along the rods, not a single clamped point, so it develops full conductor RTS without crushing the strands.
2. Why Preformed
Preformed dead-ends install with no tools or press, cannot over- or under-torque, and spread load smoothly — eliminating the stress concentration of a bolted or compression clamp. They are the standard for guy strand, earthwire and smaller conductor terminations.
3. Colour Coding by Size
Each set is colour-coded to a conductor diameter band so crews pick the right one by sight. Using the correct colour is essential — an oversize set will not grip, an undersize set will not wrap on. Always match colour to conductor.
4. Full RTS Holding
Correctly matched, the preformed dead-end holds 100% of the conductor RTS — the conductor is always the limiting element. The long helical contact is what lets it reach full strength without a mechanical clamp.
5. Rod Material
Galvanized-steel rods suit steel guy strand and earthwire; aluminium-clad rods are used on aluminium conductors to avoid bimetallic wear. Match the rod material to the conductor metallurgy.
6. The Thimble Eye
The dead-end ends in a thimble eye that takes the dead-end shackle, clevis or guy hardware. Order with the matching thimble-clevis and dead-end fittings so the termination is complete.
