Where it is used

The stay (guy strain) insulator is inserted into a guy wire to insulate the lower, ground-side portion from the line voltage — so a guy that is touched, or that contacts a conductor, does not energise the ground end. Its interlocking porcelain form keeps the guy intact even if the porcelain is broken.

Installation sequence

  1. Select the class for the guy size and mechanical load.
  2. Cut the guy run where the insulator is to sit.
  3. Thread both guy ends through the interlocking slots.
  4. Form the guy ends back with grips or clamps.
  5. Confirm the insulator interlocks and holds the guy load.

Buyer’s Guide: Stay Insulator

1. What a Stay Insulator Is

A stay (guy strain) insulator is a porcelain block inserted into a guy wire. It breaks the guy electrically into an upper and lower part, so the ground-side length stays at earth potential even if the upper part contacts or is energised by the line — a safety device on guys near live conductors.

2. The Interlocking Failsafe

The two guy ends thread through slots that interlock, so even if the porcelain cracks or shatters the guy does not part — the mechanical link holds. This fail-safe geometry is the defining feature of a strain insulator.

3. Why Insulate a Guy

A guy running near energised conductors can pick up voltage by contact or induction. The stay insulator keeps the lower, reachable portion of the guy at ground potential, protecting people and livestock at the anchor.

4. Class & Strength

ANSI C29.4 classes 54-1 to 54-3, with mechanical strength (30–70 kN) matched to the guy. The insulator must be at least as strong as the guy it sits in.

5. Placement on the Guy

Fit it in the guy at the height required by the safety code — high enough that the energised portion is out of reach, low enough to insulate the reachable length. Follow the local code for position.

6. Stay vs Guy-Strain

"Stay insulator" and "guy strain insulator" describe the same device; some networks reserve "strain" for the higher-strength interlocking type. Both insulate a guy — match the class to the guy load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a stay insulator do?
Insulates the lower part of a guy wire from line voltage, so the reachable ground-side length stays at earth potential even if the upper part is energised.
What if the porcelain breaks?
The two guy ends interlock through the insulator, so the guy stays mechanically intact even if the porcelain cracks — a fail-safe.
Why insulate a guy at all?
A guy near live conductors can pick up voltage by contact or induction; the insulator keeps the reachable portion safe at the anchor.
What class do I need?
ANSI C29.4 classes 54-1 to 54-3, mechanical strength 30–70 kN — at least as strong as the guy it sits in.
Where on the guy does it go?
At the height the safety code requires — energised portion out of reach, reachable length insulated. Follow local code.
