What Is an Anchor Rod?
An anchor rod (also called a guy rod or stay rod) is a threaded steel rod that connects an underground anchor plate or helix anchor to the guy wire attachment at the base of a utility pole. The rod transfers the horizontal tension load from the guy wire, through the anchor rod assembly, to the ground anchor below grade.
Anchor Rod Components
Eye Anchor Rod
The main anchor rod has a forged or welded eye at the top (for guy wire attachment) and a machine thread at the bottom (for coupling or direct connection to the anchor). Standard diameters are 5/8″, 3/4″, and 1″. Raxsteel anchor rods are hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A153 or ISO 1461.
Couplers & Extensions
Where the required anchor depth exceeds a single rod length, coupler sleeves and extension rods are used to build up the assembly. Both right-hand and left-hand thread configurations are available. Round rod and square shaft extensions are stocked for helical anchor systems.
Helical Pile Caps & Leads
For helical pile foundations used in light pole and small structure applications, Raxsteel supplies pile caps (bearing plates welded to shaft top) and square shaft lead sections with helix plates in standard 1.5″, 1.75″, and 2″ shaft sizes.
Standards & Certifications
All anchor rod products are manufactured to ANSI C135.1 / RUS specifications and hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A153. Material certificates and test reports are available on request.
