Where it is used

The shoulder eye bolt adds a forged shoulder beneath the eye, giving the bolt a wide bearing seat that resists bending when the load pulls off the bolt axis. It is used at angle and junction structures where an insulator string or guy applies side load that would bend a plain eye bolt.

Installation sequence

  1. Select the thread and length for the member and side load.
  2. Bore the member for the shank.
  3. Seat the shoulder flat on the member face.
  4. Secure with the square washer, nut and lock nut.
  5. Connect the insulator string / guy to the eye.

1. What a Shoulder Eye Bolt Is

A shoulder eye bolt is an eye bolt with an integral forged shoulder between the eye and the shank. The shoulder seats flat on the member and braces the bolt against side load, so an off-axis pull does not bend the shank where it leaves the member.

2. Why the Shoulder

A plain eye bolt is strongest in straight tension; a side pull tries to bend it at the member face. The shoulder spreads that side load over a wide bearing seat, keeping the bolt straight at angle and junction structures.
