Where it is used
The insulator tie is a preformed conductor tie that secures the conductor to a pin, post or spool insulator. Supplied as a top tie (conductor on top of the insulator at tangents) or a side tie (conductor in the side groove at angles), it wraps the conductor to the insulator neck with factory-formed helical legs — replacing hand-wound tie wire.
Installation sequence
- Select the colour-coded tie for the conductor size and form.
- Seat the conductor in the insulator groove (top or side).
- Wrap the preformed legs around the insulator neck and conductor.
- Snap the legs home so the tie fully seats.
- Confirm the conductor is held firmly without strain.

1. What an Insulator Tie Is
An insulator tie is a preformed set of helical legs that binds the conductor to a pin, post or spool insulator. It does the job of hand tie wire — holding the conductor in the insulator groove — but applies the same way every time and grips without nicking the conductor.
2. Top Tie vs Side Tie
A top tie holds a conductor sitting on top of a pin insulator at tangent (straight) structures; a side tie holds the conductor in the side groove at angle structures, where the line pulls sideways. Choose the form by where the conductor sits on the insulator.
3. Why Preformed Over Hand Tie Wire
Hand tie wire varies with the lineman, can loosen, and may nick or work-harden the conductor. A preformed tie applies consistently, grips without damage, and is faster on the pole — uniform quality across a crew.
4. Sizing & Colour
Colour-coded to the conductor diameter (5–14 mm). Match the colour so the legs wrap the conductor and insulator neck correctly; the wrong size will not seat.
5. Aluminium Alloy
Bare aluminium alloy to match the conductor, so there is no bimetallic wear at the tie and it carries its share of current cleanly at the support.
6. Pairing With Insulators
Used with distribution pin, post and spool insulators and their pins / studs. Order with the matching insulator and crossarm pin so the tie, groove and conductor all agree.
