Application & Installation
Where it is used
The U-bolt is a U-shaped bolt with two threaded legs that wraps around a pole, conductor, pipe or arm and bolts to a backing plate or bracket. It is the clamping element in pole bands, cable racks, standoff brackets and many clamps — holding a round or square member without drilling it.
Installation sequence
- Select the inside width and bend for the member section.
- Wrap the U around the pole / conductor / arm.
- Pass both legs through the backing plate or bracket.
- Fit lock washers and nuts on both legs.
- Tighten evenly so the U seats square on the member.

1. What a U-Bolt Does
A U-bolt clamps a round or square member without a hole through it. The U wraps the member, the two legs pass through a plate or bracket, and nuts pull the assembly tight — the basic gripping element of pole bands, racks, standoffs and many clamps.
2. Round vs Square Bend
A round bend matches a pole, conductor or pipe; a square bend matches an angle iron or square arm. Using the right bend seats the U fully on the member so it cannot rock or slip under load.
3. Sizing by Inside Width
Select the inside width to the member diameter or section — the U should close on the member with the legs square through the plate. Too wide and it does not grip; too narrow and it will not seat.
4. Thread & Strength
1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 in leg threads to suit the clamping load. Two nuts and lock washers hold each leg; tighten evenly so the load shares between legs.
5. Galvanizing
Hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A-153, nuts tapped to run over the zinc, for long service on the pole.
6. Pairing
Used with backing plates, pole-band saddles, cable-rack bodies and standoff brackets. Order the U-bolt with its matching plate or saddle.
