Application & Installation
Where it is used
The clamp-type crossarm pin mounts a pin-type insulator where the crossarm cannot be drilled — it bolts a clamp base over the edge of the arm instead of passing a shank through it. Common on steel arms, retrofits and locations where a through-hole would weaken the member.
Installation sequence
- Set the clamp base over the crossarm edge at the insulator position.
- Tighten the clamp bolts to grip the 3-1/2 / 4 in arm.
- Confirm the pin stands vertical and square to the arm.
- Thread the pin-type insulator down onto the lead / nylon top.
- Tie or clamp the conductor into the insulator groove.

1. What a Clamp-Type Crossarm Pin Is
A clamp-type crossarm pin carries the same 1 in ANSI insulator thread as a standard pin, but mounts with a bolted clamp that grips the crossarm edge rather than a shank through a drilled hole. It is the no-drill option for pin insulators.
2. When to Choose Clamp Over Bolt-Through
Use the clamp type on steel crossarms you cannot drill, on retrofits where adding a hole is undesirable, or where a through-hole would reduce the arm's strength. The bolt-through pin remains simpler and cheaper where drilling is allowed.
3. Arm Fit & Clamp Range
Clamp bases are sized to common 3-1/2 in and 4 in arm sections; wider clamps are available on request. The clamp must seat fully on the arm face so the insulator stands vertical under load.
4. Lead vs Nylon Thread
As with all our crossarm pins, the insulator top is cast lead or moulded nylon, both 1 in ANSI. Lead conforms tightly; nylon is lighter and re-threads cleanly. Match to your insulator stock.
5. Cantilever Rating
Clamp-type pins are rated to 1,200–1,500 lb cantilever (ANSI/IEEE 10°). Because the clamp adds a small lever arm, confirm the rating against your conductor tension and angle as you would a bolt-through pin.
6. Material & Galvanizing
The body and clamp are cast ductile iron (ASTM A-536), hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A-153. Clamp bolts are galvanized steel. The assembly ships complete and ready to mount.
