Application & Installation

Where it is used

The pole-top make-off is a preformed tie that secures the conductor to a pole-top pin or spool insulator at distribution voltages. Its helical legs wrap the conductor to the insulator neck — replacing hand-applied tie wire with a faster, consistent, factory-formed tie.

Installation sequence

  1. Select the colour-coded make-off for the conductor size.
  2. Seat the conductor in the insulator groove / on the pin.
  3. Wrap the preformed legs around the insulator neck and conductor.
  4. Snap the legs home so the tie fully seats.
  5. Confirm the conductor is held firmly without strain.

Buyer’s Guide: Pole Top Make Off

1. What a Pole-Top Make-Off Is

A pole-top make-off is a preformed conductor tie for the top phase on a pin or spool insulator. The preformed legs wrap the conductor to the insulator, holding it in the groove without a separate hand-wound tie wire.

2. Why Preformed Over Tie Wire

Hand tie wire varies with the lineman and can loosen or nick the conductor. A preformed make-off applies the same way every time, grips without crushing, and is faster on the pole — consistent quality across a crew.

3. Top Tie vs Side Tie

The pole-top make-off is a top tie for the conductor sitting on top of a pin insulator; side-tie versions hold the conductor in the side groove at angles. Pick by where the conductor sits on the insulator.

4. Sizing & Colour

Colour-coded to the conductor diameter (5.5–12.5 mm). Match the colour so the legs wrap the conductor and insulator neck correctly.

5. Aluminium Alloy

Bare aluminium alloy to match the conductor, so there is no bimetallic wear at the tie and the tie carries its share of current cleanly.

6. Where It Fits

On distribution pole-top pins, spool insulators and secondary racks. Order with the matching pin / spool insulator and pole-top pin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pole-top make-off?
A preformed tie that secures the top conductor to a pin or spool insulator — replacing hand tie wire with a faster, consistent factory-formed tie.
Why use it instead of tie wire?
It applies the same way every time, grips without nicking the conductor, and is faster on the pole — consistent quality regardless of the lineman.
Top tie or side tie?
Top tie for a conductor on top of a pin insulator; side-tie versions for the side groove at angles. Pick by where the conductor sits.
How do I size it?
By colour code matched to conductor diameter (5.5–12.5 mm), so the legs wrap conductor and insulator neck correctly.
What insulators does it suit?
Distribution pole-top pin insulators, spool insulators and secondary racks. We supply the matching insulators and pins.
